WELCA Board changes 2026 meeting times and begins planning yearly service projects
SMLC Newsletter, May 2026
Changes are coming to WELCA board meetings. The board, which has been meeting once each month for years, is changing to a quarterly schedule. Board meetings will be held on the third Wednesday of the month beginning in July 2026, followed by October 2026, January 2027 and April 2027. The function of the board is to gather circle meeting information and coordinate WELCA service projects which take place throughout the year. Anyone interested in circles and/or service projects can contact a WELCA board member or the church office. Circles continue to meet monthly throughout the year. Contact Glenda Churchey, Gisela Reiger and Kathleen Corpus, circle coordinators, for time, place and bible study themes. New circles are always welcome.
There are lots of service projects throughout the year for anyone interested in community involvement through WELCA. Current projects include on-going assistance in distributing quilts to Lutheran World Relief, gathering items for health/personal care kits for distribution locally and regionally, new mother gifts to SMLC members, and designated giving to local groups (e.g. Not One More Alabama and Manna House). WELCA hosts fellowship events open to all St. Mark’s women in late September. Any ideas for this fall? Planning begins soon. Past fall events include “Lucy’s Chocolate Factory” and a trip to the Wichahpa Commemorative Stone Wall on the Natchez Trace as well as recognizing a church member as “The Bold Woman” of the year, which honors an individual’s service throughout the year embodying the service of Martin Luther’s wife, Katharina von Bora.
Mark your calendars for the SES synod annual WELCA Convention which will be held this year in Chattanooga, TN at the Embassy Suites Hamilton Place from September 11-13, 2026. The convention theme is “Where God Meets Us: Mountain Top Moments.” Several SMLC members will be attending so if you are interested in joining the fellowship, information regarding room rates and convention registration information is available in “The Weaver” a WELCA synod publication available online through the synod website or by contacting a SMLC board member – Kathleen Corpus, Kathy Sieja, Terry Ann Deason or Terry Ganoe.
