lamb of god

As he saw Jesus approaching to be baptized, John the Baptist proclaimed “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).  The next day, a few verses later,  Jesus again comes to the river Jordan and John proclaims to two of his own followers “Look, the Lamb of God”.  One of these is Andrew, who went to his brother Simon (soon to be called Peter by Jesus), and having found him said “We have found the Messiah” (John 1:41).  Andrew and Simon were the first of the twelve disciples.

The lamb holds a standard with a cross symbolizing the passion of Christ and His death for the sins of the world.  The nimbus-style halo depicts Christ’s holiness.

While Jesus is called the Paschal Lamb, hearkening back to the Old Testament use of the lamb as a sacrificial offering, we must remember that while the lamb by virtue of its weak and mild disposition unknowingly submits to being sacrificed, Jesus quite knowingly offered Himself as a sacrifice once and forever for sin.  Jesus death, resurrection, ascension, and position at God’s right hand are pieces of God’s plan, not accidents.  Jesus the Lamb is also Jesus the Lion of Judah (Revelation 5:1-9).

Other variations of the Lamb of God show a stream of blood flowing from the lamb’s chest into a chalice, or the Lamb may lay on the Book of Life, sealed by seven seals opened by the Lamb in Revelation chapters 6-8.
