As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.
St. Mark's WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) currently has five active ladies' Circles – Deborah, Martha, Ruth, Hannah and Rachel. You do not have to be a member of a Circle to be part of WELCA. As a woman of St. Mark’s, you are automatically a part of our WELCA community.
The WELCA representatives for 2017 are:
Contact Person: Pat Barber Secretary: Bonnie Pearson Treasurer: Jean Loux
Circle representatives are:
Deborah Circle: Glenda Churchey, Mary Ann Williams, Mary Wiley Martha Circle: Cindy Herndon Ruth Circle: Joyce Brown, Pat Barber Rachel Circle: Patty Sykstus, Pam Birkholz Hannah Circle: Traci Billman
St. Mark’s WELCA supports various projects and charities of WELCA Southeastern Region and the national WELCA. Health kits and school kits are collected and assembled for Lutheran World Relief. Contributions for the charities designated for the annual Southeastern Synod WELCA Convention are collected and taken to convention. In addition, each Circle has at least one mission project.
Anyone interested in becoming involved in a Circle or WELCA is welcome to contact any of the board members.
Deborah Circle Meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 10:00a.m., in the Fellowship Hall or in a circle member's home. Current membership is 25 mature ladies, most of whom have been homemakers for the better part of their lives. Some have come to us from other countries, but have been in Huntsville for many years, and a part of St. Mark’s for all of that time. We enjoy fellowship with each other, sharing our cooking and entertaining skills, and joining the charitable projects presented to us. Some members also participate in the Knit and Crochet group. We have, in the past, collected paper products and personal sized items to donate to Hope Place, Huntsville Hospitality House, St. Mark’s Blessings Basket and the National Children’s Advocacy Center. Another project is making and filling school bags to be presented at the WELCA SE Synod for distribution overseas. We have also taken part in assembling health kits.
Many members travel and share those experiences. Our programs are varied and come from different sources. Sometimes, a speaker will enlighten us on some project or interest of theirs and/or there will be a presentation from a variety of sources such as: Women of the Bible or Lutheran Woman Today.
Our summer meetings usually consist of a luncheon at a restaurant of our choosing, the Ruth Luncheon, and a salad luncheon at the Tim’s Ford Cottage of Marianne Stevens.
We have a Christmas Luncheon each year where those who have chosen a Sunshine Sister reveal their “secrets”.
Questions and inquiries about the Deborah Circle may be directed to Circle leaders: Linda Bennett (256-534-1070), Barbara Reinartz (256-533-2879), Marianne Stevens (256-539-0256), or the church office.

Rachel Circle Meets on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Recently rejuvenated, this group of lovely women will gladly welcome you. Collecting various healthcare items each month, donations are given to the Community Free Clinic. This circle rotates meeting sites in member's homes. Ruth Circle This is a dynamic group of fun loving ladies! They meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month, usually in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00a.m., for bible study, refreshments and fellowship. Bible study normally comes from The Lutheran Woman Today magazine. Community service is a focus of this group. Circle members provide food for the Community Free Clinic workers and toys for the children who come there. They provide baby layettes for Huntsville Hospital Labor & Delivery, and gift bags with emergency necessities for Huntsville Hospital NICU. Last year, their surplus funds were donated to Lutheranch. They recently made a donation to Christmas Charities as well.
Hannah Circle Brand-new, this circle meets on the first Monday of each month at 6 pm. Currently meeting at the church in SS Room #8, childcare is also provided. Be an inaugural member of this new group as we decide how we will serve the community and our church. Check the St. Mark's Messenger for details of each month's meeting.
