2011 is the year of small group ministry. We hope to bless many people by their participation in Bible studies--especially during the Sunday School hour. Other groups will meet in homes and at various times.
Weekly bible study classes are held at 10:00a.m. on Sunday mornings. There are also groups meeting to discuss books by Christian authors, and there is always a bible study going on the WELCA circles.
On Sunday Morning:
- "Faith and Discovery" Adult Sunday School Class continues! Starting 6 May, please join us as we study Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years by Diarmaid MacCulloch, This award-winning author presents a history of Christianity tracing the Hebrew Bible’s origins and chronicles the three major strands of the Christian faith documenting the religion`s spread, the formation of the New Testament and the role of Christianity in America. This is a long text -- to begin with we’ll only cover the first 200 pages. On 6 May, we'll hand out books and discuss the author. On 13 May, we'll again pass out books and start the text. Contact Mike Hamilton (464-8723) if you'd like a book. We start at 10 AM in the Basement Choir Room. We're always happy to see new faces!
- Discipleship for Everyone has begun to study of Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer, Meyer writes a valuable and convincing primer on what Buddhists would call "mindfulness" from a dedicated Christian perspective. Using a rich scriptural context, she convinces listeners " to think what you are thinking about". Filled with many anecdotes from ministry, her points are made in a accessible and personable style. The psychology is sound though ensconced in conservative Christian language. Happily, Meyers encourages meditation, both on scripture and in prayer as a way to be in the moment.
- Take Two Movies & More begins a new movie on April 15, Seven Days in Utopia, based on the best-selling inspirational book Golf's Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia, by David Cook, shows how a person's personal journey can be given a jolt in the unlikeliest of places--even a lowly golf course. The actors, including Lucas Black, Robert Duvall, Kathy Baker, and Melissa Leo, are absolutely stellar, pouring their hearts into this unusual story that on the surface is simple, but is as profound as any human experience an inch or two below that surface.
